New trash cans are coming to the Broadwalk, and they will bring advertisements with them.
By next fall, Hollywood's mesh cans along the beach will be replaced by 100 rectangular receptacles mounted on poles. A North Miami company, En Viro Systems, will donate the cans to the city so that it can paste advertisements to their sides. No lewd jingles or ads for X-rated movies, city commissioners said when they agreed to the three-year deal last week. But this should save the $4,800 Hollywood spends each year to replace 60 of its 100 refuse containers that wear out each year.
"Litter is a big problem today," said Eric Nadel, who owns the company that will install the trash cans. "By going into this garbage-can business, we are able to at least make something that is ugly look nice."
Nadel's other corporations have installed advertising on bus shelters and benches since 1984. He rents space on bus benches throughout Hollywood.
Each can will have space for three 17-by-22-inch advertisements; one will be reserved for a city public service ad and two will be sold for about $65 per month each, Nadel said. The city will receive a cut from each advertisement sold.
The new cans are expected to arrive in late August. The 100 old cans will be placed in city facilities such as parks, said Bill Deputy, a senior buyer for the city.
